Job Description

Hannes Snellman is a top-tier Nordic law firm with 350 outstanding lawyers and other professionals based in Finland and Sweden.

We advise leading international and local corporations across all business sectors.

In addition to unique assignments, we offer our employees an opportunity to work with sharp-minded professionals in an atmosphere of inclusiveness.

Our employees have different backgrounds and personalities, but we all share the same values: a commitment to provide high-quality services and a passion for what we do.

We encourage independent thinking and take great pride in the professionalism of our teams and individuals.

Today’s successful recruits are tomorrow’s firm.

What We Are Looking For

We are currently looking for a part-time trainee translator to our Language and Translation Service with a particular focus on Swedish translations (Finnish-Swedish-Finnish and English-Swedish-English).

You will be working in our cross-border Language and Translation Service alongside our three full-time English translators (meet the team here).

What this means in practice is that you will be working for both our Helsinki and Stockholm offices but you will be based in Helsinki.

In addition to translating, you will also be proofreading and editing texts in Swedish, Finnish, and English.

Thus, you are expected to be fluent in all three languages.

We do not have any specific qualification requirements and accept applications from people with different educational backgrounds.

Suitable backgrounds could, for instance, be a Finnish-speaking student of Swedish translation with English translation as a minor or someone who has Finnish and Swedish as home languages and who is studying English translation.

However, do not be afraid to send in your application if your profile does not fit into these frameworks.

While we do not have any specific educational requirements, we do expect you to consider yourself a true language professional and that you are reliable and efficient by nature.

We hope that you have a positive attitude and an eye for detail and that you enjoy perfecting the minor, and not so minor, details of a text.

Our motto is that “it’s not finished until it’s perfectly finished”, and we always aim for a perfect end result.

Our clients are usually our own lawyers, and it is essential that you have a genuine customer-service attitude in you.

You also need to be comfortable in your own skin and believe in yourself and your abilities as work can be a little hectic at times.

What We Offer

As a trainee translator, you will have an excellent opportunity to gain work experience from the field of legal translation while working at a Nordic law firm.

Your job description will be similar to that of our full-time translators, however with an emphasis on the translation of Swedish-language texts.

Our translations cover anything and everything from informal e-mail messages to court judgments.

Outi Talola, Translation Service Manager: “Hannes Snellman is a Nordic top-tier law firm, and working as a trainee translator would offer you a brilliant opportunity to work in an international atmosphere with a bunch of people committed to providing top-quality service. Our translation team is small and cosy, and we cherish our team spirit and do everything within our power to make you feel at home from the very start. There is no such thing as a silly question, and we will be there to support you all the way throughout your traineeship.”

Our employees’ job satisfaction and well-being are very important to us.

In order to improve the overall job satisfaction, we are offering all our employees the most comprehensive training programmes, personal mentoring, as well as fringe and other benefits.

Continuous learning is crucial for both our employees and our company, and to support this goal, we have set up our own study programme, Hannes Academy, which organises comprehensive introductory training as well as internal and external lectures covering both legal and non-legal topics.

We employ a hybrid working model offering significant opportunities to work from home and from the office.

At the same time, though, our translation team is a very close-knit team and other translators are there to offer you their full support even when working remotely.

The agreement would ideally be until the end of August 2023, and your working hours will be flexible ranging from 2 to 4 days a week (up to 20 hours a week).

Your weekly schedule will be accommodated to your studies and other needs.

Recruitment Process

Our recruitment process has three stages: application, translation test from Swedish into English (a legal text), and interview.

Interviews will be conducted in late August and you will be starting in the autumn, for instance some time in September, whatever works best for you.

Please submit your application (in English), CV, and relevant certificates no later than 14 August 2022.
